To Bee or Not to Bee – A hand-animated short (in production)

VIPS, a naive and cheerful wasp, falls head over heels in love with a beautiful bee princess, HONEY, who suffers from pollen allergy. Posing as a bee suitor in the attempt to court her, Vips must conform to the bee society's strict social order and long-established traditions, which run contrary to his own carefree nature. Of course, his quest goes far from smooth, and when the masquerade is exposed, he almost ends up at the scaffold.

To Bee or Not to Bee – Teaser (45 sec)

The story is told without words, but through full classical hand-drawn animation that is carefully choreographed to the music. With Danish pianist Leo Mathisen's wonderful jazz classic "To Be Or Not To Be" (1941) as a recurring theme, we are taken on a ride through four different musical genres: march, baroque, avant-garde jazz and finally the liberating swing of Mathisen's original.

A classic love story, To Bee or Not to Bee is intended as light and fun entertainment for children and adults alike, although with kids aged 3 to 9 as the primary target audience. On a deeper level, one can reflect on the main character's attempt at pretending to be something he is not in order to live up to external demands and expectations. While it is possible to read heavy subjects like racism and discrimination into the story, the main intention is for the audience to enjoy a fun and heartwarming film.
